Bandara Internasional Kualanamu – Kualanamu International Airport (KNIA) di Deli Serdang Sumatera Utara resmi beroperasi pada hari Kamis (25/7/2013). Bandara yang diklaim sebagai Bandara Internasional terbesar kedua di Indonesia itu akan menggantikan peran bandara Polonia di Medan. Bandara Kualanamu juga menjadi bandara pertama yang terintegrasi dengan kereta api di Indonesia dan Fasilitas check-in yang telah dilengkapi teknologi Baggage Handling .
Sembilan belas tahun yang lalu, perencanaan pembangunan bandara Internasional ini telah dimulai, tepatnya sejak tahun 1994 yang dimulai dari pembebasan lahan. Pembukaan bandara dilakukan oleh Menteri Negara BUMN Dahlan Iskan dan Wakil Menteri Perhubungan Bambang Susantono.
Bandara Kualanamu dibangun menghabiskan dana Rp 5,8 triliun. Pembangunan fisik bandara seluas 1.365 hektar dan luas terminal 118.930 meter persegi. Kapasitas penumpang mencapai 8 juta orang atau hampir 10 kali lipat dari jumlah penumpang maksimal Polonia. Pada pengembangan lanjutan yang telah diprogramkan, kata Tri, Kualanamu didesain mencapai kapasitas maksimal untuk melayani hingga 22,1 juta pergerakan penumpang per tahun.
Fasilitas bagasi otomatis ini merupakan yang pertama di Indonesia. Selain memiliki tingkat pendeteksi keamanan tertinggi (Level 5), teknologi ini memungkinkan penumpang untuk melakukan pendaftaran bagasi di konter manapun tanpa takut barangnya tertukar pesawat atau jadwal penerbangan.
Untuk mencapai Kualanamu berjarak sekitar 39 kilometer dari pusat Kota Medan, para penumpang memiliki banyak pilihan moda transportasi, mulai dari kendaraan pribadi, taksi, bus, hingga kereta api dari stasiun besar Medan. Fasilitas kereta api ini merupakan yang pertama di Indonesia. Bandara terbesar kedua setelah Bandara Soekarno-Hatta ini akan menjadi hub penerbangan internasional untuk kawasan regional Asia.
Kualanamu juga dilengkapi fasilitas canggih dan modern lain yang sebelumnya tidak ada di Polonia. Antara lain delapan garbarata (avio bridge) yang akan menghubungkan penumpang langsung dari area keberangkatan di dalam terminal menuju kabin pesawat.
Ruang tunggu (boarding lounge) yang luas dan memisahkan antara penumpang penerbangan domestik dan internasional, juga menjadi hal baru yang akan dirasakan pengguna jasa. Kualanamu juga memiliki area komersial luas di tiga lantai yang ada.
Pesawat Garuda Indonesia dengan nomor penerbangan GA 181 merupakan pesawat pertama yang terbang dari Kualanamu. Pesawat tujuan Jakarta ini terbang pada pukul 05.15 WIB.
